Barton Springs Pool
Barton Springs Pool is a staple of Austin, and a must do for any summer activity list. The natural spring fed pool is a great place for a family outing. Pack up the grand kids, and spend the day enjoying cool water which remains between 68-70 degrees all year long. Centrally located, this is a great place to cool down in the heat of Texas summer while enjoying the outdoors.
Shopping at the Domain
Situated in a beautiful park-like setting, The Domain features 100 upscale and mainstream retail stores and restaurants, almost half of which are exclusive within the market. A sampling of retailers includes high-end boutiques such as David Yurman, Louis Vuitton, Ralph Lauren, Tiffany & Co. and Austin’s only Neiman Marcus, as well as more traditional retailers like American Eagle Outfitters, Banana Republic, Express and more. Don’t forget my wife’s favorite jewelry store Kendra Scott… That reminds me, her birthday is right around the corner. The Domain Restaurants include favorites like Kona Grill, Maggiano’s Little Italy, McCormick & Schmick’s, North Italia and many more.
Lake Travis
Lake Travis is a short drive from Austin and has a variety of activities, as well as wonderful views to offer. I love to explore the north side of the lake in the more quite, laid back side. There are a variety of boutique hotels and rentals available for a great weekend getaway. If you want to get on the water, a pontoon boat is a great way to explore the lake and spend the day.
Mt. Bonnell
Mt. Bonnell is a must see for anyone living in Austin. Also known as Covert Park, Mt. Bonnell is a prominent point overlooking the Lake Austin part of the Colorado River. It is located at 3800 Mount Bonnell Rd on over 5 acres to explore at your leisure. It is considered the best view in town by many, but be warned, first there is a long, long set of stairs to negotiate to the top.
This is a great place to catch an awesome view of the summer sunrise. The sun rises early in the summer, and so will you if you want to experience this beautiful site. Beat the heat, grab a cup of coffee and hike the long staircase up to the top of Mt. Bonnell. The dazzling view of the sun rising up over the Colorado River will be well worth the early morning workout.
Don’t forget to bring your camera!
Zilker Botanical Gardens
For more of a relaxing afternoon activity the Zilker Botanical Garden is located right in the center of Austin. The gardens are on parkland that is host to some of the greatest displays in nature; with handsome trees, natural grottoes and aquatic features that have been integrated into a design of spectacular beauty and tranquility.
Zip Line in the Hill Country
Take a tour of Austin’s natural beauty from way up high. Adventure seekers can zip line over treetops and lake shores at several locations around Austin, including Spicewood and Lake Travis. Zip line prices usually include a couple of hours of zip lining, light hiking, and recreation in some of Austin’s most beautiful outdoor settings. This is one of those bucket list items if you have never been zip lining before.
