What does the exercise program consist of?

Our PD-RENEW program protocol is 60- minute sessions 2-3 days per week for 8 weeks with a Parkinson’s certified Physical Therapist or Physical Therapy Assistant.

During these sessions we focus on the client’s symptom presentation and goals – including (but not limited to) improving posture, walking, and/or freezing of gait episodes; improving ability to do functional activities like getting up out of chairs, in/out of the car, on/off the floor, in/out of bed, up/down stairs, and/or moving around at home.

We utilize the components of an effective Parkinson’s exercise program that focus on big, powerful movements, dual-tasking (ie. thinking and moving at the same time), and mindfulness.

What will be covered in the 1-on-1 counseling sessions?

Research is emerging showing us that certain lifestyle factors are correlated with faster and slower Parkinson’s symptom progression and that lifestyle modification can be a therapeutic strategy. In these sessions, clients learn how to implement various wellness practices that have been correlated with slower disease progression.

Each week will consist of a brief lecture on the research supporting each topic, as well as an implementation activity to help each client integrate these strategies into their daily life, stay accountable to their program, and achieve the absolute best outcome possible.

Here is the topic schedule for the weekly counseling sessions:

Week 1: TAKING INVENTORY

Where are you and where do you want to go?

Week 2: OPTIMIZING MEDICATION

How do we measure “success” in the PD-RENEW program?

Strategies to manage Parkinson’s disease fall into two buckets:

1. Strategies that treat Parkinson’s symptoms now
2. Strategies that slow the disease process in the long-term

The best tools we have for improving PD symptoms now are medication and exercise. These can be acutely measured by things like the UPDRS, PDQ-39, or physical outcome measures like gait speed, etc. During the PDRENEW program, these will be tracked throughout the 8 weeks to help us understand how well the treatment program is improving your symptoms in the short-term so we can modify accordingly

Measuring the disease process over time has historically been a challenge. However, a tool created by Dr. Laurie Mischley and her research team at Bastyr University has made it much easier. This tool is called PRO-PD. The PRO-PD is a patient-centered, continuous measure of Parkinson’s disease severity that correlates to quality of life. It’s a free tool and we teach our PD-RENEW clients how to use it to help them track how their disease is progressing over time (lower scores are better and can be influenced by lifestyle factors such as diet, social health, etc.).
