7 Things I Wish My Patients Knew About Physical Therapy

Hey there, I’m Ryan, a physical therapist in Austin at Natural Fit Therapy. Over the years, I’ve worked with so many people who come in with pain, mobility issues, or injuries, and I’ve seen firsthand how physical therapy can change lives. But I also know there are a lot of misconceptions about what we do. If you’re just starting your journey or thinking about seeing a physical therapist, here are seven things I wish all my patients knew.

1. Physical Therapy Is More Than Just Exercises

A lot of people think physical therapy is just about doing exercises, but there’s so much more to it. Sure, exercises are a big part of the process, but I also use:

Manual Therapy

Hands-on techniques like soft tissue work and joint mobilizations to help with pain and movement. This can be especially helpful if you’re dealing with stiffness, chronic pain, or recovering from surgery. Manual therapy can improve circulation, break down scar tissue, and enhance mobility.

Education

Teaching you how to move better, avoid injury, and adjust your daily activities. I believe knowledge is power, and when you understand what’s causing your pain or limitation, you can take an active role in your recovery. I’ll help you learn simple techniques to incorporate into your daily life to keep pain at bay and prevent future issues.

Lifestyle Adjustments

Helping you make small changes that support healing, like better posture or ergonomic setups at work. Many aches and pains stem from poor movement habits or improper workplace setups. I’ll work with you to identify areas for improvement, whether it’s adjusting your workstation, improving your walking mechanics, or learning better lifting techniques.

Physical therapy isn’t just about fixing an injury; it’s about helping you move better for the long run. My goal is to give you the tools and strategies to stay active, independent, and pain-free—not just for today, but for years to come.

2. Your Consistency Matters

One of the biggest things I emphasize with my patients is that consistency is key. That means:

Showing up for your appointments

Life gets busy, but making your physical therapy sessions a priority is crucial. Each session builds on the last, and missing appointments can slow your progress.

Doing your home exercises (even when you don’t feel like it!)

I get it—sometimes, the last thing you want to do at the end of the day is another set of exercises. But these exercises are specifically designed to reinforce what we do in our sessions, helping you build strength, flexibility, and mobility between visits.

Following the recommendations I give you for your daily activities

Small changes in how you sit, stand, sleep, or move throughout the day can have a big impact on your recovery. Whether it’s adjusting your posture, modifying how you lift heavy objects, or taking breaks to stretch, these little habits add up over time.

The people who commit to the process see the best results. Physical therapy isn’t a quick fix—it’s a journey. It’s a team effort, and I’m here to guide you every step of the way. But your active participation is what makes the difference between temporary relief and long-term improvement. Stick with it, and you’ll be amazed at what your body can achieve!

3. Pain Isn’t Always a Bad Thing

I know that pain is scary. But not all pain is a sign that something’s wrong. In physical therapy, we talk about:

“Good” pain – The kind that means your muscles are working and getting stronger. This might feel like a deep stretch, mild soreness, or fatigue in your muscles after a session. It’s a sign that your body is adapting and building resilience.

“Bad” pain – Sharp, intense pain that could mean injury. If you ever feel a sudden, stabbing pain or something that lingers beyond normal soreness, that’s a red flag. We need to adjust your treatment to avoid further harm.

The key is to communicate with me about what you’re feeling so we can adjust as needed. Your feedback helps me fine-tune your program to keep you progressing safely. Remember, a little discomfort can be part of the healing process, but you should never push through severe pain. Learning to listen to your body and distinguish between productive discomfort and harmful pain is a crucial part of recovery.

4. Physical Therapy Can Help Prevent Future Injuries

A lot of people come to me only after they’ve been injured, but did you know physical therapy can also help prevent injuries? By identifying weaknesses, improving flexibility, and teaching you better movement patterns, I can help you avoid problems down the road. This is especially important if you’re active, have a physically demanding job, or have recurring pain.

5. Recovery Takes Time, But It’s Worth It

Healing isn’t instant, and I know that can be frustrating. But trust the process! Here’s what I always tell my patients:

Set realistic goals and celebrate small wins.

Progress isn’t always about big leaps—it’s about the little victories along the way. Maybe today you can move a little further, walk a little longer, or have less pain doing an activity you love. Recognizing these improvements keeps you motivated.

Understand that some days will be better than others.

Recovery isn’t a straight path. Some days you’ll feel great, and other days might be tougher. That’s completely normal. The key is to stay consistent and not let setbacks discourage you.

Stay patient and trust that progress is happening, even if it’s slow.

Your body needs time to heal, strengthen, and adapt. Rushing the process or pushing too hard can lead to setbacks. Give yourself grace and focus on long-term success.

I’m here to keep you on track and remind you that every step forward is a step toward feeling better. Trust in your body’s ability to heal, and know that all the work you’re putting in now will pay off in the long run.

6. Communication Is Key

The more we communicate, the better I can help you. Please don’t hesitate to:

Tell me what’s working (or what’s not!).

If something feels great and is helping, let me know! On the other hand, if an exercise feels uncomfortable, painful, or ineffective, I need to hear that, too. Adjusting your plan based on your feedback ensures that we’re making progress in the best way possible.

Ask questions about your treatment, exercises, or recovery.

There’s no such thing as too many questions. I want you to understand why we’re doing each exercise and how it benefits you. If something doesn’t make sense or if you’re curious about other treatment options, just ask! Being informed helps you stay engaged and motivated.

Update me on changes in your pain or mobility.

If you suddenly experience a new pain, increased discomfort, or even a breakthrough moment of improvement, I need to know. Small changes can indicate progress or the need for adjustments, and the sooner I know, the better we can adapt your treatment plan.

Physical therapy is a partnership, and the more I know, the better I can tailor your treatment to what you need. Your input is invaluable, and by working together, we can ensure that you get the best results possible. Open communication is the key to making sure your therapy is as effective and comfortable as possible.
