Dear Austinite,
My name is Ryan Seifert – A physical therapist and knee pain expert at Natural Fit Therapy here in Austin Texas. We help Austinites prepare for and enjoy active retirement life.
Do you know what is the most common myth about Injections and Surgery for the knee pain?
Lets start with the injections!
Is the Injections the only option for the knee pain? No
Knee pain is one of the most common complaints we hear in our clinic, and almost everyone has either HAD a cortisone injection or is considering one.
I believe there is a time and place for injections, but a majority of the time cortisone injections don’t treat the ROOT CAUSE of the pain, only mask the pain and then, when the shot wears off, the pain returns.
So, if the pain in the knee is not the root cause, what could be?
There could be A LOT of things, but here are 3 very common reasons for knee pain
- Tight hips – You have 17 muscles in your hips! Way more than just your “tight hip flexors” Any of them can be tight and causing unnecessary pressure on your knee when you’re walking or, going up and down stairs, getting out of your car. A shot won’t fix this!
- Leg length discrepancy – 40-70% of people have legs that are different lengths. This can put unnecessary load on your knees and cause pain. A shot won’t fix this!
- Issues at the foot – You have 26 bones, 33 joints, 107 ligaments, and 19 muscles in ONE foot! If any of these are out of whack, every time you take a step your foot can’t move properly, and your knee just goes along for the ride. A shot won’t fix this!
Now you may be thinking, “but I have arthritis! Of course that’s why my knee hurts!” – Not true! This is a #myth!
#Trues – Arthritis is a normal part of aging, but it doesn’t automatically mean it will be painful.
We’ve seen so many people in our clinic with knee arthritis that are pain-free after working with us because the culprit of their knee pain was something else.

So, now that you understand why you may still have knee pain after your cortisone injection, you may be wondering what other options you have?
If that’s you, I want to invite you to see our virtual Knee Pain Workshop about the pros and cons of various injections for knee pain and why a lot of injections fail.
